What to wear to your engagement session?
What to wear to your engagement session is a question I often get from couples who are preparing for their session. What you wear can make a huge impact on your photos! So I thought I’d share some of my tips that may help when choosing your outfit for your engagement session!
Comfort is key
One of the most important things when picking your outfit is to wear something that you’re comfortable in. A thing to keep in mind is that if you feel uncomfortable and your outfit is too tight or it is something that you'd never wear, it will show in your photos. So, it is super important that you feel your best in whichever outfit you choose!
Layers
I am a huge fan of layers when it comes to photoshoot outfits. Layers are an awesome way to bring dimension and interest into your outfits. It is also an awesome way to bring variety into your session as you can add or subtract some of the layers to change things up.
Outfit Colours
It's always smart to stick to either warm or cool colour tones when choosing a colour palate. When going warm choose Brown, red and orange. When going cool, Blues, greens, greys. You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family. Also, take into consideration what time of year it is and your location, then pull colour inspiration from that.
Distracting Clothing
A big thing when picking your outfit for your session is that you don’t want your clothing to take away from your photos. It's important to wear clothes that represent you, but also important to not be too distracting. It's nice to keep patterns minimal and only have one patterned piece of clothing between the two of you. It is also ok to have a pop of colour, just make sure the colours aren't too vibrant. Another thing to keep in mind is to stay away from flashy brands, logos, graphics, or text that will stand out and take away from the couple.
Two Outfits
Feel free to bring an outfit change! You may want to do a dressier look with something like a flowy dress and button-down and then maybe go a bit more casual for the other outfit. Also, accessories are always fun to add interest and make your outfits your own!
Hair & Makeup
It's never a bad idea to treat yourself to hair and makeup for your engagement session. They have different tricks they do for photoshoots that look great on camera. Make sure to discuss your makeup and hair vision with your artist and show your everyday makeup so you still feel like yourself. It’s also great to use your wedding day hair and makeup trial for your engagement session.
